Robot Grip – Filled with Coffee Grounds
A novel robot hand has been invented by The University of Chicago using an inflatable balloon filled with coffee grounds. By using a technique known as jamming air is blown into the balloon this in turn allows the coffee grounds to move and form a seal around the chosen object to pick up. The air is withdrawn and thus locks the object in the gripper.
Yet another fun use for old coffee grounds!
Here’s a clip of the gripper in action – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jj3yVf7ZUcI&feature=player_embedded#at=15
